The Problem with Mainstream Media and Breastfeeding

By in breastfeeding, celebrities & pop culture, mom stuff, natural parenting

Breastfeeding advocates can’t help it — when we see that a popular show or magazine is looking to discuss full-term (or extended, as they always say… or extreme) breastfeeding, we can’t help but get our hopes up a little, hoping it goes well and is beneficial to the cause. But we also wince, cringe, and [...]

“Busting Out” Documentary About Breasts Gives Some Great Insight into Where America’s Gone Wrong with Breastfeeding

By in breastfeeding, mom stuff, news & politics, review

I turned on the documentary “Busting Out”, a film about the history and politics of our odd obsession with breasts, and how it impacts us as a culture. Filmmakers Francine Strickwerda and Laurel Spellman Smith put together a pretty impressive short summary of our shifts in breast-obsession here in the US over a period of time. It was interesting to see the discussion about how “most desired size” has been something that has regularly shifted, from very small, nubile barely-pubescent breasts, to very large and curvaceous ones. But always, the interest in this country is the breast.

By in activism, breastfeeding, mom stuff

I was reading some old posts over at Just West of Crunchy yesterday, and came across her fabulous 10 Things Breastfeeding Advocates Should Stop Saying article, and it really got me thinking about things. While discussing breastfeeding with breastfeeding advocates, I really hate feeling like they’re defending formula marketing. Now, I don’t mean the women who are [...]

Target Nurse-In Reactions Are Old, Stale and Kind of Annoying

By in activism, breastfeeding, mom stuff

People had mixed reactions to the amazing national Target Nurse-In. Some argue that events like that help people get used to the sight of nursing moms, others argue that it’s just a dramatic show, or even hurts the cause. That’s not my opinion, but people are definitely entitled to their own thoughts. Donn Esmonde, of [...]

Breastfeeding Activists: Don’t Be Your Own Worst Enemy

By in breastfeeding, mom stuff, natural parenting

Have you ever heard the phrase “Fervor of the Born-Again”? You know, where people who are new to an idea, lifestyle or belief system are so fervent about it that they can be overbearing to the point of turning people off to an idea? I used to be like that with breastfeeding. I really did. [...]

Voice-Activated Phone Menus Are a Mom’s Worst Nightmare

By in mom stuff, parenting

Technology is one of my favorite things in life. Seriously. Between the internet, my cable networks, my ereader, and so on, I’m in heaven. When we’re not broke, my husband and I enjoy keeping up with current technology too. But it doesn’t always work out quite right. I mean, how many times have you called [...]

How Not to Go Crazy If Nap Time Goes Away

By in mom stuff, parenting, toddler

Ahhh, nap time. Glorious, sacred nap time. That one time of day when moms all around get to sit down (or do a mad clean up), have their cup of tea (or fold laundry), and relax (or work crazy hard). Every mom plans things that need to get done, but will wait for nap time, [...]

On Labels: Why I Call Myself AP… And Why I Don’t Like To

By in mom stuff, natural parenting, parenting

Labeling people is generally seen as a negative thing, and kids as well, since then there comes some ideal mold that you, or they, feel the need to fit into, or feel restricted by. When it comes to referring to yourself as an “Attachment Parent”, that can come with a lot of positive or negative [...]
