My name is Christie and I have ammonia problems. Or, I did anyway. My husband kept asking me if I’d left a dirty diaper somewhere because he’d smell the strong ammonia smell when Aurora peed, and he was starting to worry that she was dehydrated, despite my insistance that it was just our nasty diapers. I’d literally boiled them on the stove, bleached them until the hemp was white (the first time I’ve willingly used bleach in my life), washed them in vinegar and hot water for two days straight, soaked them in anything people suggested and they KEPT SMELLING LIKE CRAP! I was at the point where I wanted to just stop cloth diapering but knew I couldn’t afford to.
I’d looked at Rockin’ Green and even e-mailed them before to figure out what they’d recommend for me, but I was so hesitant to try another detergent of that type that I ended up not buying any. So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that I didn’t think I’d like Rockin’ Green. I really didn’t. Enough that when I got the offer to try some and said yes, I really thought about telling them I’d changed my mind because I didn’t want them to send something and have me hate it from the start.
But, I went ahead and chose my scent for the detergent, Lavender-Mint Revival, at mid-level strength, called “Classic Rock.” The scents I read aloud to my husband and we both chuckled… things like Mötley Cleän, Bare Naked Babies and Mighty Mighty Marshmallow. It was a toss-up between the one I chose and The Green T’s though, but I like the one I’ve got. One thing that really worried me was my bad reaction to all powdered products I’d tried in the past, including even OxyClean… I have to do what I call the “dump and run” where I hold my breath, because powders make it really hard for me to breathe, usually. This didn’t require extreme measures, and I was able to stand there and smell the goodness of the detergent without feeling like my lungs were struggling.
I also was sent the Funk Rock Ammonia Bouncer, a product designed specifically to get the funk out. I was cautiously optimistic as I followed the guidelines to soak the diapers in the detergent, then the Funk Rock overnight, then wash in the detergent again. I made each step last extra long, crossing my fingers, trying to figure out what in the world I was going to do if this DIDN’T work.
But lo and behold — MY DIAPERS DON’T STINK! The Rockin’ Green detergent and Funk Rock got rid of what days of washing in hot water, bleach and vinegar and even boiling couldn’t get rid of, and I’m freaking ecstatic. Now my husband isn’t concerned that my daughter’s dehydrated either and actually believes me when I say the smell was just the diapers, and he also stopped bugging me about “washing those nasty things” because the dirty bag now actually contains any smell like it’s supposed to.
Plus, they have the tiniest scent of lavender and mint, which is super nice, and I’m tempted to wash my clothes in… which won’t be an issue once they release their formula designed for clothing for the family, which I’m really, really tempted to buy.
I am really glad I went ahead and gave the detergent a shot, and I’m totally in love with the detergent now. I’m bagging up some for my friend who is having ammonia problems as well, and am really excited to be able to share it with her. It’s funny to be excited about detergent and non-stinky diapers, but alas, such is the life of a mom.
Thanks Rockin’ Green! My daughter’s butt thanks you too!
Seriously guys, if you have ammonia issues you can’t get rid of, try it. You can even buy samples for $0.75! They also encourage you to look at the map or even e-mail them if you’re not sure which strength you need… Soft Rock, Classic Rock or Hard Rock.
Have you tried Rockin’ Green?

Never tried but maybe I will next time (baby!) around! Sounds much easier than boiling inserts every few months… and the lavender mint scent sounds awesome!
Oh, boy, do we need to try some!! We have tried the same rigamarole to get rid of the ammonia that you tried, Christie, and to no avail. We have all but given up recently on our beloved cloth after 2+ years of almost exclusive cloth diapering. We need a “revival” of our love for the cloth!!
Thanks for pointing us in the right direction. I have hope anew.
