You know, it’s hard enough to get some women to breastfeed their own babies. But here is a woman who will breastfeed a dog. A really cute furry little pup. Some dog lovers dress their pooches in fancy clothes and feed them off the finest china they have. Some even cook for their mutts, send them to fancy doggie spas, buy them a coat more pricey than my most expensive boots. But this … bringing a dog to a woman’s breast to nurse is just, well it’s just … OMG people it’s a freakin’ calendar! It’s not real. That woman isn’t lactating and that dog has some teeth and a jaw structure that probably isn’t compatible with nursing from a human. (Or is it? I never tried.) And you know what? If the dog was sick and needed human breastmilk to save his life, then why should anyone who isn’t that woman care that she is offering her breastmilk to a dog?
But I suppose this image is a disgrace to nursing moms. So why then am I not offended? Am I just too jaded and have seen one too many extreme porn images and super graphic photos of dead people in war zones that an image of a woman nursing a pup for a calendar called “Puppy Love” where all the proceeds go toward helping an animal shelter doesn’t sicken me at all?
Maybe people who protest Miss March and her canine suckling are advocates for dogs. Trying to give them a voice. Maybe if puppies could talk, they would protest. Maybe they would start a campaign “Woof! Woof! Don’t exploit us at human teet! We don’t want the money this amazing calendar is raising to save our lives. Just give us cows milk instead. Woof!”
This “Puppy Love” calendar is the brainchild of model Melissa Hayward who is raising money to provide money to feed and care for the dogs at a no kill shelter. No models or photographers were paid and the profits go to Ash Animal Rescue. It’s kind of like Katie’s Pinups for Pitbulls calendar – people coming together for a good cause. Agata Dembiecka is the model in the risqué pose with the pup. She’s a member of PETA, so we know the pup wasn’t harmed while at her breast. Thank goodness.
But the breastfeeding photo, which is only one month out of 12 is making some people all uptight and not wanting to sell the calendar, which sucks because it’s a great cause. And maybe some people will see this as a bad thing for breastfeeding, even though the calendar isn’t to raise awareness for breastfeeding. I find it sweet, the whole thing, even the image of the woman nursing a pup. It’s saying, “We love dogs this much we treat them like human babies.”
What do you think? Does this image offend you?
